Enoploteuthidae - Wikipedia
Enoploteuthidae is a family of squid comprising approximately 40 species in four genera. Most species have a mantle length ranging from 3–13 cm (1.2–5.1 in). Hooks are present on all arms and tentacles. The family is best known for the large array of photophores throughout the body.

Enoploteuthid squid are small, between 3 and 13 cm in mantle length. All open-ocean species occupy upper mesopelagic waters during the day. In the regions where the mesopelagic zone intersects the slopes of land masses (i.e., the mesopelagic boundary zone) some species may occur at shallower depths.
Habitat and Biology: Enoploteuthids are mesopelagic squids that undergo extensive diel vertical migrations. Paralarvae and juveniles are epipelagic and inhabit the upper 200 m. Interest to Fisheries: Generally enoploteuthids are not fished on a commercial basis.

During the course of the extensive taxonomic studies on the enoploteuthid squids, mainly from the North Pacific, it became clear that the genera Enoploteuthis, Abralia and Abraliopsis are reasonably divisible into subgenera or at least species-groups that are critically revised here.
