The Edam Museum is the oldest museum north of the river IJ in the province of North Holland, and is therefore one of the oldest in the Netherlands. Housed at two characteristic sites in the old city, the museum illustrates Edam’s rich history, from shipbuilding, ceramics and architecture to renowned families and everyday life.

The old town centre, within the borders of the old city walls, is nowadays protected by the government, both the main structures and architectural details. A number of notable buildings survive in good condition. Grote Kerk or St. Nicholaaskerk, of cathedral dimensions, was probably built at the beginning of the 15th Century.

The oldest one, a so-called ‘see-saw bridge’ can be seen if you walk to the cheese market and town centre coming from the bus station.
