Guy who lived across the street from this house I built for my Wife, and I, was a home builder also. He got interested in "my cedar" after coming over to peek at the place during construction.

Around here (Chicago) many of the lumberyards (e.g. Menards) store it outside, so it gets wet every time it rains. Given the higher moisture content, it has a tendency to warp more while it dries, especially of the moisture content drops quickly.

I'm not against painted pine, but it seems like it would clash with the amazing exposed cedar colors/grain of the rafters and the (mandatory, so it would seem…) Shou sugi ban (burnt) wall slats.

Mar 25, 2019 · I noticed there was a response posted just before mine about Aromatic Cedar which is different than the usual Western Red Cedar used for outdoor structures and toys. I would DEFINITELY not use a poly finish on outdoor play sets. In a couple of years it will need to be stripped and re-done and will look terrible.

Nov 5, 2013 · I refinished a cedar chest and built a new top for it using cedar. (there are pictures in my projects). Even though it does have knots, as long as they are small, I didn't have any issues just sending them through the planer (reallllly light cuts, like 1/128) and then using the ROS. I didn't fill any, but none were big/loose enough to need it.
