2010年1月15日 · The problem with all this is that if the insulation under consideration is loose or batted fiberglass, it isn't delivering anywhere near R thirty whatever or R forty whatever, mostly because fiberglass lets air blow right through it, and it winds up getting compressed, wetted, moldy or pushed aside or whatnot over the years.

I plan on using a latex roof elastomeric compound and some 3M 8067 tape that I have left over to seal any areas needed. Insulation contractor is suggesting I use blown fiberglass instead.

If you want to go truly high-R it's generally better to use OSB to support the load, at which point you can apply the thinnest of gypsum on the OSB without danger of sagging or cupping over time.

2010年11月2日 · Pipe penetrations in lumber are protected now by nail plates. If the insulation had been placed above the piping, you wouldn't have this problem. However, since the insulation is below it, if you now insulate above the piping, you won't be solving the actual problem. Insulation doesn't stop pipe freezing, it only slows it down.

Since you've already spent money on ICF construction with R25 walls, you could consider going as high as R49 to reduce summer cooling and winter heating costs. So the minimum of R30 or R38 is determined by code, and anything more than R49 would probably be a VERY long payback.
