2009年7月4日 · If you use 'a pair of' the verb has to be singular if 'a pair' is the subject. The fact that the book gives the unnatural examples in OP doesn't change that. But once we've used a pair in a sentence, we then start talking about 'jeans' which is plural.

2010年12月3日 · Pants, like scissors, is a special case. These pants are too long for me. This pair of pants is too long for me. In the fashion industry you may occasionally hear "this pant", but this is industry jargon. In normal use, pants is always plural, even if you are talking about just one pair. So confusing, but that's English!

If they just say "pants" the subject is plural in form, and it doesn't matter whether that's one pair or a hundred pairs. 2010年1月6日 · I often say "pair" instead of "pairs" for all these things, as in "three pair of pants". I don't know whether it is colloquial or not. I wouldn't write it that way but it sounds perfectly natural to say "pair", especially if I am talking quickly.
