With Winter 2024 quickly approaching, Texans worry if the power grid will hold up to the demand this year. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas ( ERCOT) CEO, Pablo Vegas, says Texas electric providers are ready for whatever winter brings this year.

Addressing the grid ahead of winter, ERCOT meteorologist Chris Coleman predicts that even though Texas has a “greater-than-average" probability of extreme cold events, new power generation that was added to the grid lowers the chances of it failing, according to The Texas Tribune.

KVUE sat down with the CEO of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, or ERCOT, to discuss its winter outlook and more. Pablo Vegas said the agency is ready for what's ahead. Since the deadly winter storm in 2021, Vegas said there have been a lot of changes.

ERCOT says conditions this winter could spark extreme cold, but additional power supply and continued weatherization efforts will lower the risk of power outages.

"The more I look at this winter, the more cold potential I see." Storm Uri caused blackouts to millions of homes and businesses in Texas and led to the deaths of more than 240 people. The power crisis also prompted Texas to begin overhauling its grid to increase reliability.
