WASHINGTON, USA — It seems that over the past few years, weather terms have become more sensationalistic. “Polar vortex,” “atmospheric river” and “bomb cyclone” come to mind.
Day says the term "bomb cyclone" has been used by scientists for decades and describes "a low-pressure system that is undergoing explosive cyclogenesis," or the creation of cyclonic air circulation.
However, this doesn't mean it is completely dark for 24 hours a day for areas experiencing polar night. This is due to a time of day called "civil twilight," according to the Weather Channel.
