It's not something you should book until you get there due to weather. We always book the stargazing tour once we have arrived in the village and know what the weather is going to be like as it's no use booking that particular tour if it's going to be cloudy. We booked through the hotel.

The 2 ways to go are the west coast or down the middle. I think down the middle might be the best for night sky's. Methven, twizal, tekpao (the observatory is there) wanaka, to Queenstown. The west coast is stunning but can be a journey all of its own. Hope that helps.
